• Optimizing the Mobile Workforce – Law department and law firm clients are working hard to ensure that they have the right technologies and training to maximize their remote workforce.  They tell us that they are doing this to keep costs in check and ensure the highest lawyer and staff efficiency, possible.  Increasing efficiency is viewed as an opportunity to save significant costs, now and later.
  • Resisting Slowing or Stopping Strategic or Cost Reduction Initiatives – Almost all clients, law firms and law departments, report that they are focused on keeping projects and initiatives in play, even though there is great pressure to allow strategic initiatives and project to stagnate during this time.  Some clients believe this is the time to “double down”.  They tell us that they are working to clearly communicate that  major initiatives are continuing and target dates remain unchanged.  Most are using strong program and project management resources to keep projects on track.  Some clients are using LegalShift’s resources, with deep experience in managing remotely executed projects (“Project Distancing”), where they do not have the strength in experienced remote project management resources internally.   Clients have noted that the costs of using experienced outside resources are paltry compared to them slowing or abandoning important strategic of cost reduction initiatives.
  • Proactively Managing Remote Employee Effectiveness – LegalShift believes that remote workforce adoption is great in theory, but early LegalShift client experience indicates that some employees are more effective than others.  Some law firm and law department clients are tracking hours that employees work, which is not, in our opinion, what we think they should be measuring.  Tracking employee effectiveness can only be accomplished by tracking the tasks that they are performing –  managing and measuring employees and tasks are paramount.  A few clients have noted that while providing collaborative tools to employees is required, they are finding increased need to structure task assignments, target dates, responsibilities and tracking of same.  Clients report that they are very concerned about higher inefficiencies and costs leakage during this unusual time.
